BIONIP (Ciprofloxacin) 500 mg Tablets. DRUG CATEGORY: Broad Spectrum Quinolone MECHANISM OF ACTION: Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It functions by inhibiting DNA gyrase, a type II topoisomerase, and topoisomerase IV, enzymes necessary to separate bacterial DNA, thereby inhibiting cell division, resulting in bacterial cell death. INDICATIONS: Adults Infections of the kidneys and/or the urinary tract, genital organs, gonorrhoea and prostatitis. Infections of the abdominal cavity,skin and soft tissues. Infections of the bones and joints. Sepsis. Inhalation anthrax (post-exposure). Children For the treatment of acute pulmonary exacerbation of cystic fibrosis associated with P. aeruginosa infection in paediatric patients aged 5-17 years. For the indication of inhalational anthrax (post-exposure). DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION: Adults For most infections the recommended oral dose for adults is 250-750 mg every 12 hours or 500-1000 mg every 24 hours, depending on severity Children Only where benefit exceeds risk, 7.5-15mg/kg daily in two divided doses.
